Filipino Fellowship
OUR BEGINNING IN MISSIONS:
Judy and I (Ely) have been involved with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) since we were single. We got married in June of 1989. As a family, we launched out into missions in 1992 when Abby was just 3 and BJ was just 2 years old.
Abby is now 17 yrs old and is about to graduate High School this year, while BJ is in year 11 of High School. On March 18, 2004 – 13 years after BJ’s birth - God blessed us with another boy, his name is Elisha Kairos Joel, and he is now 3 years old.
We started our involvement with YWAM in Antipolo, Rizal, Philippines where we joined as staff of a Discipleship Training School (DTS). The following year (1994), the Lord incredibly provided for us to attend further training called the School of Intercession, Worship and Spiritual Warfare in Brisbane, Australia. That was a short 4 months spent in Brisbane, Australia. Out of this, He paved the way for us to return and get involved in YWAM Brisbane’s ministry. We came back in October 1996. From then we staffed schools, co-lead outreaches (a couple of times to Malaysia), and once directed a DTS and led a team to Malaysia/Philippines working together with local churches and tribal groups in the villages.
FILIPINO MINISTRY:
It was during the school we did in 1994 that God initially drew our attention to His burden for our people in this nation. He spoke through one of the lecturers, a profound word that this nation is our spiritual inheritance. At that point in time, we had no inkling as to what God had in mind about the future as far as this word coming to flesh.
In August 1999 (before we left Brisbane for the Philippines for a Sabbatical leave after being in Missions for 7 years) we attended a pastors and leaders networking meeting. Once again God revisited His word and we received a clear directive about His calling to us.
While we were in the Philippines, we took some time to rest and while doing that we were involved with our local church in Davao City. This experience gave us a hands on glimpse of what God had in His heart. It was at this point God stirred the vision and burden to pray for the Filipinos in Australia, particularly in Brisbane.
We strongly felt that the Lord wanted us to return to Australia and start a Filipino Ministry. After a year and four months in the Philippines, the Lord opened the door for us to return to Brisbane on December 13, 2000. Before leaving we attended a YWAM conference in our city and God confirmed the sense of calling that we had to reach out and minister to Filipinos.
In Brisbane, we got involved again in staffing two DTS’s with YWAM, and also led an outreach team to Malaysia and Indonesia.
Then, in the middle of March 2001, we commenced with 4 people as a Filipino Bible study and grew in numbers for the next 3 years. In the fourth year we moved our venue to Northside Christian Family Church (AOG). We were formerly called “Northside Filipino Church” in 2005. We met every Saturday for 2 years and then decided to move it to a Sunday, which is how it is at present (2007).
It is the Filipino Church ministry's objective to reach out to the unchurched Filipinos in Brisbane and to look after their spiritual needs.
In the 6 years since we started this ministry, we have led more Filipinos to the Lord and are actively discipling them (and their Australian spouses). God has been bringing in a diversity of people to be a part of the ministry, to support us in building His church, and to see His purposes come into fulfilment.
We are in a season where God is strongly moving and at the same time structuring the ministry to establish His foundations for stability and maturity. We are very much encouraged to see personal growth happening in the lives of people in their walk with God.
We are looking forward for the harvest of souls coming to God’s kingdom in this city.
EVERYONE IS WELCOME:
If you are around Brisbane and you are looking for a Filipino group to fellowship with, you are most welcome to join us. Our church is not only attended by Filipinos, but a variety of people from different cultures.
We as a church believe that the Word of God (the Bible) is infallible. It is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training for righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17). We believe that Jesus Christ is the only way to eternal life (John 3:16). We also believe that God is in the business of restoring and healing lives of people to release them for a greater purpose (Isaiah 61).
OUR REGULAR FELLOSHIP TIME IS EVERY SUNDAY FROM 2:30 TO 5:30 P.M. A MEAL FOLLOWS AFTER THE MESSAGE IS SHARED.
We meet at the NORTHSIDE CHRISTIAN COLLEGE LECTURE THEATRE, Flockton St. Everton Park.
