THE CHAI TENT

On a crisp autumn evening or a breezy spring afternoon, what better way to enjoy the beauty of the day than sitting down with a few good friends over an aromatic cup of tea? At YWAM Brisbane, we understand how powerful and memorable such moments can be, so we decided to devise a ministry centred on this very experience. We call it the “Chai Tent”—a mobile tea house visited by more than 10,000 people every year.

Dressed with Bohemian-flair, our tent is big enough to hold hundreds, yet retains a unique, intimate feel amidst candles, low lights and funky décor. Recognized up and down the Eastern coast of Australia, the Chai Tent serves as a haven where backpackers, youth and families alike can come and “chill out” during the intensity of a big event or festival. Live bands strum acoustic melodies while conversations effortlessly progress from small talk to deep and meaningful dialogue. With its inherent relational atmosphere, we have watched time and again how such an environment lends itself perfectly to friendship evangelism. So, what starts as enjoying a simple “cuppa” can potentially end in a life-changing decision for Christ. Who knew?
